Kidd brings Mexico's Gutierrez back to NBA

TORONTO (FIBA Basketball World Cup/NBA) - It's all about timing, and familiarity.

That's how Mexico point guard Jorge Gutierrez can view his big chance to make it in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Let go by the Brooklyn Nets earlier this season, Gutierrez is in the NBA again after answering an S.O.S. from the Bucks several days ago.

The team is led by his former coach in Brooklyn, Jason Kidd.

Though he only signed a 10-day contract, Gutierrez has played in three games and even started in Monday night's 82-75 win at Toronto.

He does, indeed, appear to have a genuine opportunity to stick around after his short-term deal comes to an end.

Point guard Kendall Marshall is lost for the season because of a torn ACL and playmaker Brandon Knight also dealing with quad soreness.

On Monday night, Kidd started Gutierrez and played him 28 minutes.

Though he failed to score, he did some other things to help Milwaukee win and solidify their sixth-place position in the Eastern Conference standings.

He handed out five assists, came up with four rebounds and also competed on defense.

"His teammates trusted him," Kidd said.

"That just shows the team unity and that the guys believe they're doing the right thing."

Gutierrez now receives much of the attention back home in the Mexican media since Gustavo Ayon has departed the NBA and joined Real Madrid.

Both players were leaders last year at the World Cup, where Mexico followed up their 2013 FIBA Americas Championship win with a run to the Round of 16.

Gutierrez, a native of Chihuahua, averaged 9.2ppg and showed on numerous occasions that he has plenty of talent.

Gutierrez will also be important this year when Mexico host the FIBA Americas Championship, a qualifying event for the Rio de Janeiro Games.

Right now, though, he's focused only on working hard with Milwaukee and keeping his fingers crossed that the club will keep him around for the remainder of the season.
