Kazakhstan cruise past Kyrgyzstan to clinch FIBA Asia Championship spot

ASTANA (2015 FIBA Asia Championship) - Kazakhstan rolled to an 84-39 victory over Kyrgyzstan on Monday to capture the Central Asia Basketball Association (CABA) title and earn a place in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship that will take place in Changsha-Hunan from 23 September to 3 October.

The home side, playing in the Kazakhstan capital of Astana, stormed out to a 23-8 lead by the end of the opening quarter and put the result beyond doubt when they stretched the advantage to 43-18 by half-time.

Pavel Ilin, the 22-year-old guard of BC Astana, led the home side with 17 points.

He made three of his five shots from the arc.

The trio of Alexandr Zhigulin, Rustam Murzagalev and Vitaliy Lapchenko - who helped Kazakhstan to an eighth-place finish at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship - also hit double figures in scoring.

Zhigulin and Murzagaliev poured in 13 points apiece and Lapchenko weighed in with 10.

Another big contributor was Anatoliy Kalesnikov, a 26-year-old forward who finished with eight points.

The coach of Kazakhstan, Vitaly Strebkov, said: "First of all, I congratulate both teams - the team of Kazakhstan for getting the job done and the team of Kyrgyzstan on its return to the international arena after a long absence.

"As for the game, it was obvious that the level of our team is a little higher."

We just did what had to be done - Strebkov

While the performance may not be seen as a barometer on how well Kazakhstan will play at the FIBA Asia Championship in China later this year, where the competition is going to be much stiffer, it does bode well that Strebkov has plenty of young players.

Murzagaliev and Lapchenko are each just 22 years of age and the Karagandinskaya-born Zhigulin only turned 21 on Sunday.

In addition to Ilin, Kolesnikov, Lapchenko, Murzagaliyev, Anton Ponomarev, Maxim Marchuk and Dmitriy Klimov all play for the Astana side that has climbed into the top eight of the VTB United League standings.

We must admit the level of basketball in Kazakhstan is much higher than ours - Mikhailov

"In principle, we knew that our opponents were a strong team," Kyrgyzstan coach Alexander Mikhailov said.

"We do not have an easy situation with some of the main players unable to come.

"Well, those who came, I think honestly worked hard.

"Congratulations to the team of Kazakhstan on the victory.

"We are grateful for the excellent organization."

The last time Kyrgyzstan played at a FIBA Asia Championship was in 1995.

Kazakhstan become the fifth team to qualify for the 16-team tournament, joining hosts China, defending champions Iran, Qatar and Kuwait.

Iran qualified by winning the 2014 FIBA Asia Cup.
