Jordan dig in and beat Qatar

CHANGSHA-HUNAN (2015 FIBA Asia Championship) - Jordan took their lumps early on at the FIBA Asia Championship but the tough schedule appears to have made them battle hardened.

That was the conclusion to be drawn on Sunday when they defeated Qatar, 84-73.

Going up against the Group D winners, Rajko Toroman's side edged ahead in the third quarter and played with tremendous resolve over the last 15 minutes to claim a vital win.

Alex Legion had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Jordanians, who also got very important contributions from veterans Osama Daghlas, Zaid Abbas and Mousa Alawadi.

Turning point: After Trey Johnson scored to give Qatar a 42-40 advantage with 6:13 to go in the the third quarter, Daghlas answered with a three-ball for Jordan that triggered a 12-2 run and put them ahead for good.

Stats Don't Lie: Jordan were much more accurate from three-point range (11 of 31, 35.5 percent) and the free-throw line (15 of 23, 65.2 percent) than Qatar (six of 22, 27.3 percent) and (11 of 19, 57.9 percent).

Game Hero: Both Daghlas and Legion can lay claim to this honor because each played with cool heads and determination in the third quarter when Jordan trailed by seven points and battled back to not only pull level but to go in front for good. Daghlas finished with 18 points.

The Bottom Line: This was a game that Jordan needed to win, not just to fortify their place in the standings but to gain a psychological boost. They could easily have caved in but instead played with purposed against a Qatar side that had been one of the tournament's best in the Preliminary Round.
