Japan flying high after series triumph

TOKYO (2015 FIBA Asia Championship) - Japan's national team is in a positive frame of mind these days as they warm up for the FIBA Asia Championship.

The Far East outfit, looking to make a mark at next month's event in Changsha, China (23 September-3 October), won two of their three games on home soil against a representative side from the Czech Republic.

The Japanese clinched a series victory with a 75-61 victory at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium Annex.

Keijuro Matsui's second-quarter explosion when he buried four three-balls and had 18 points was one of the keys for Japan.

Yuta Tabuse, who played American college basketball and even had a brief stint in the NBA, is the Japan point guard and he was encouraged by the latest performance.

"We showed some positive things and had things we still need to improve on a lot," he said.

"I think it was good for us to find out what they are through these three games."

Japan's women have been flying the flag high for the country in international basketball of late, winning the 2013 FIBA Asia Women's Championship to clinch a spot in last year's FIBA Women's World Championship.

Hopes are high that Japan will have success this summer at the FIBA Asia Championship, where the winner will clinch a spot in the Rio de Janeiro Games and the second- and third-place teams will seal places for the three FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTs).

"We entered the game trying to continue our defensive hard work from yesterday," Japan coach Kenji Hasegawa said after the series' clinching victory.

"We wanted to build self-confidence by continuing to do that, and I think we were able to achieve that."

Japan will play in Group A at the FIBA Asia Championship and will have to take on defending champions Iran, Malaysia and India.
