Hosts for February 2021 FIBA European Qualifiers windows tournaments confirmed

MUNICH (Germany) - The venues for the upcoming February 2021 windows of the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 Qualifiers, FIBA EuroBasket 2022 Qualifiers and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Pre-Qualifiers were confirmed by the Board of FIBA Europe on Friday, December 4.

After successfully holding the games of the respective Qualifiers in bubbles in November, the third and last window of all three competitions will also be organized as protected environment tournaments in order to ensure health and safety of all participants.

The locations approved by the Board are as follows:

FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 Qualifiers (January 31- February 7, 2021)

FIBA EuroBasket 2022 Qualifiers (February 15-23, 2021)

The location for the Group D has changed, with the bubble now set to be organized in Istanbul, Turkey.

FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Pre-Qualifiers (February 15-21, 2021)

The most important criteria in choosing the hosts, like for the previous window, was health and travel guarantees and compliance with FIBA health protocols, including testing and controlled entry into a secure environment. 

Preference was given to candidacies from nations that are scheduled to play two home games in the February window.

Two of the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 Qualifiers tournaments, Groups D and F, will be confirmed in the coming days.

The exact schedule of games will be confirmed at a later stage.

The Board was also presented with a review of the November bubbles organized for the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 and the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 Qualifiers as well as the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Pre-Qualifiers.

All mini tournaments in Europe were hailed as a great overall success, with only four teams affected out of a total of 73 participating in the 18 events.

YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Board also approved the remaining hosts for the 2021 Youth European Championships, which have seen a record number of 259 teams registered to participate across the 16 events next summer.

Podgorica (MNE) was confirmed as the venue for the FIBA U20 European Championship, Division A, Sopron (HUN) is set to host the FIBA U20 Women's European Championship, Division A, while FIBA U20 Women's European Championship, Division B will take place in Skopje (MKD).

For all other tournaments, the 2020 organizers were confirmed by the Board as hosts of the respective edition of the 2021 European Championships in September.

Edit: The Executive Committee of FIBA Europe unanimously decided to move the dates of the FIBA U20 Women's European Championship 2021 in Sopron, Hungary to July 6-14, 2021.

CLUB COMPETITIONS

The Board was presented with a review of the EuroLeague Women bubbles, as well as the recent decisions to modify the format of the EuroCup Women and FIBA Europe Cup after taking into consideration the epidemiological situation in Europe.

The Board also approved the principle that if teams are not able to arrive and participate in the designated EuroCup Women and FIBA Europe Cup bubbles, they will be excluded from the respective competition.

MISCELLANEOUS  

The Board also heard reports of the various permanent commissions of FIBA Europe and approved the following recommendations: 

  • Early designation of FIBA U16 Men's European Championship, Division A or B to Matosinhos in Portugal for 2022, depending on the classification of Portugal in the 2021 tournament. 
  • The dates for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Pre-Qualifiers Second Round to be held on the 11th, 14th, 18th, 21st, 25th and 28th August 2021.
  • The Calendar for Youth competitions in 2022.
  • The increase of the Officiating Fees as of season 2021-2022. 
  • A 50 percent decrease of players license ("B"-license) fees for European club competitions.
