Harris to present Referee Level 1 workshop

Gold Coast (Australia) - The ongoing FIBA Oceania Webinar series will continue on Wednesday (April 8) with Jillian Harris presenting a Referee Level 1 workshop focusing on communication.

Harris, a familiar face in the region with her stints as referee supervisor in the 2018 FIBA Polynesian Championship and the 2019 Pacific Games both held in Samoa shared her excitement in taking up the opportunity to share her knowledge.

Harris will tackle the effective way of communicating as a technical official in a basketball game.

"Communication, we experience this everyday especially now in this unprecedented time. Coming through as a referee and referee coach has really helped me develop in this area. The FIBA Referee Instructor Program (FRIP) course was amazing and really opened my eyes and willingness to learn more I suppose.

FRIP is aimed at developing high-quality delivery of referee education at the Global, Regional and National levels.

Harris also highlighted her experience with the "Poly Cup" and the Pacific Games in the last couple of years as a great experience for her to improve her communication skills.

"My time in Samoa at the Polynesian cup and South Pacific Games was a welcome experience as this was one of the topics that would come up and watching their development progress as you could see the referees willingly apply some of the advice given at the time," she shared.

Harris also hopes that the participants will feel welcome and relaxed to ask questions during the webinar session.

"I’ve kept it simple and hopefully have made it feel welcoming to those participants to get engaged with the session. she said. "Basketball is supposed to be fun, confidence and adding a range of options on how to utilize those tools we already have is key to being a good referee."

The FRIP Level 1 workshop presentation by Jillian Harris is part of a series of online webinars organized by FIBA in the Gold Coast.
