Hae dreams of becoming first junior female referee from Kerema

KEREMA (Papua New Guinea) - Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) historic visit to Kerama yielded exceptional results in terms of participants in their basketball, 3x3, coaching, and referee clinics.

One of the female participants, Eau Hae shared her story on how it inspired her to pursue her dream of becoming a referee.

Hae, a resident of Kerema attended the referee clinic that pushed her to share her story of wanting to become a technical official for the sport.

"During the program, I felt empowered with the responsibility of officiating a basketball game," she said. "I believe there is no junior female referee in our town and my dream is to become the first FIBA licensed official from Kerema."

BFPNG visited Kerema and organized Basketball For Good programs that invited everyone in the community to participate.

The 22-year old also discussed what she learned from being able to participate in the clinic.

"You have to be confident and sure of your knowledge to become a good referee and it was during the program I saw how the moderators carried themselves with confidence," Hae said.

"It was very inspiring for me to see and I wish to have that confidence in me one day," she added.

BFPNG Chief Executive Officer, Nick Daroa shared his excitement on having Hae on board as a potential referee from Kerema.

"We are always on the lookout for future technical officials because it gives the games more credibility with knowledgeable referees.

"We will be in communication with KABA and Hae on the possibility of continuing her journey as a junior female referee for their association," he concluded.

BFPNG's Hoops For Health program under their Basketball For Good strategy is supported by the Australian Government through the Pacific Sports Partnerships, and FIBA's Foundation, the International Basketball Foundation.

FIBA
