Granger an x-factor for Uruguay

MALAGA (ACB/Euroleague/2015 FIBA Americas Championship) - A national team can never have enough good players.

That is especially true for a country like Uruguay that is trying to climb into the reckoning for honors at the FIBA Americas Championship and compete for a spot at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

So when the subject is the possible incorporation of Unicaja Malaga point guard Jayson Granger, there is no doubting that his presence would bolster the squad ahead of a 2015 FIBA Americas Championship campaign that will see Uruguay take on Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Panama and hosts Mexico in Group A.

Had it not been for Granger, Unicaja would not have made it to the Top 16 of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague.

Does Granger want to play for Uruguay this summer?

He hasn't done so since the 2012 South American Championship for Men.

In an interview with Diario La Republica, Granger let everyone know what he was thinking.

"I have great expectations to return to play with the national team in the short-term," he said.

"This is an important year for me, I am in the final year of my contract with Malaga and things fortunately have come out well in this situation.

"I don't want to close doors to return to start defending the national team jersey.

"My aim is to be able to help our country but there are still a few details to discuss.

"Equally, my aspiration is to be able to be present and intregrate with the national team."

Those words will be music to the ears of Uruguayan basketball fans, and coach Adrian Capelli, because Granger's career has taken off since he left Estudiantes for Unicaja Malaga.

He now has two solid years of Turkish Airlines Euroleague experience under his belt.

Granger showed on a weekly basis that he has grown under coach Joan Plaza, both in the Euroleague and the Liga Endesa.

If Unicaja surprised many by surviving the Regular Season and making it to the Top 16 of Europe, they have been even more of a revelation in Spain.

In the Liga Endesa, Granger has averaged 9.1ppg and 5.4apg for an Unicaja side that is in first place with 25 wins and just four defeats.

Now I have to hope to have a good end to the season, rest a little and then see how I can fit into the [Uruguay] working group - Granger

Granger says he has yet to speak to Capelli, but will do so at the right time.

"I was told that the end of this month or the beginning of May, he might come to Malaga to discuss the issue with me," Granger said.

For the fans, they are not going to believe that Granger is going to play until he is with the team in training, or actually on the court in Monterrey, Mexico.

His absences, brought on by the need to focus on his professional career, have been the source of frustration for some.

"Many people in Uruguay don't put themselves in my situation," he said.

"I have very clear in my mind that I did things well and I always said that at the right time, I would be with the national team if they opened the doors for me.

"What happened stays in the past but it's true that it leaves you a sense of sadness as the majority does not know the entire truth and to be questioned in your own country hurts a little bit.

"Nowadays, I don't think about that.

"I live in the present and I reiterate that if the doors of the national team are open, then I want to be there."
