Gilas star De Ocampo MVP after title triumph

MANILA (2015 Asia Championship) - Talk 'N Text are the toast of Philippines basketball once again after winning a double overtime thriller over Rain or Shine in a deciding Game 7 of the PBA Commissioner's Cup.

Led by their Gilas Pilipinas stars Ranidel De Ocampo and Jayson Castro William, Talk 'N Text prevailed 121-119, despite having Rain or Shine fight back from an early 16-point deficit.

De Ocampo put an exclamation mark on what had already been a superlative series with a career-high 34 points with eight of them coming at the start of the second overtime.

He was named MVP of the Finals.

Castro William, a member of the All-Tournament Team at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, came up a rebound shy of a triple double in Game 7.

He finished with 23 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds.

Rain or Shine's Paul Lee had 38 points to lead all scorers.

Talk 'N Text have now captured seven titles in their PBA history.

We were just able to escape. - Uichico

"I have to give credit to the players for not losing poise, not losing composure," said winning coach Jong Uichico.

De Ocampo, Castro William, Lee and others involved in the title series figure to be prominent members of the Gilas team once again this summer.

They shone on the big stage last year at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain, beating Senegal and playing Argentina, Greece, Croatia and Puerto Rico in close contests.

The Philippines have sent a Gilas Cadets team to the SEABA Championship in Singapore, a qualifying tournament for the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship in Changha-Hunan, China, from 23 September to 3 October.

If, as expected, Gilas book a place at the tournament to be staged later this year, they will attempt to win the title and qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
