German side RSV Lahn-Dill reclaims top European honors with sixth title

GIULIANOVA - RSV Lahn-Dill stands alone at the top of the Euro club success list with six IWBF-Europe Champions Cup titles after the German club handled Spain's C.D. Ilunion 67-54 in the final of the tournament played in Giulianova, Italy.

Lahn-Dill are now one title clear of Galatasaray SK which finished a disappointing sixth, after taking top honors in 2013 and 2014 for their fourth and fifth crowns.

Dutch club BS Verkerk was the first to claim five titles, last winning in 1996.

Lahn-Dill won their fifth title in 2012. In fact, they have combined with Galatasaray to win every title since 2004 apart for one - SSD Santa Lucia Sport's championship in 2007.

Santa Lucia of Rome finished third with a 70-63 win over OeTTINGER RSB Team Thuringen.

Ilunion was in the final last year as well, losing to Galatasaray.

Against Lahn-Dill they were chasing the game from the start, down 20-6 after the first quarter and trailing 35-16 at halftime. They righted the ship in the second half but only enough to cut the final margin to 13.

Thomas Bohme led the onslaught, finishing as the game's top scorer with 30 points on an astounding 13 of 17 shooting night from the field. He also grabbed 13 rebounds.

Dirk Kohler added 17 points with the American duo of Michael Paye and Steve Serio each scoring 10 points. Serio also pulled down 13 boards and made it a triple double by hadning out 10 assists.

As a team, Lahn-Dill shot 53 percent from the field while holding Ilunion's shooters to 43.6 percent. A 33-24 rebounding advantage kept the Madrid side from getting second chances on their missed shots.

Great Britain's Terry Bywater led Ilunion with 20 points with Australian Bill Latham contributing another 10.

Ilunion were the better team in group play, winning all three of their games while Lahn-Dill dropped their third match to Santa Lucia.

The eventual champions were taken to the brink by fellow German club OeTTINGER RSB Team Thuringen, surviving in overtime 69-66.

"In this game, everything worked out, we played a strong tournament [including wins over] defending champions Galatasaray and last year's runner-ups Madrid, and deserved to win the title," said RSV coach Nicolai Zeltinger.

"This team can be proud of themselves," added RSV manager Andreas Joneck. "A great performance by a great team, which was crowned with the record title for our club."
