Friars and Islanders take home inaugural Guam National High School Championships

Mangilao (Guam) - The Father Duenas Memorial School and John F. Kennedy High School etched their names into the history books to take home inaugural titles of the Guam National High School Championships in the Junior Varsity and Varsity division respectively.

In January 2020, the Guam Basketball Confederation formed the new competition system that hosted the first all-island tournament of the top schools from different leagues in the country.

"We want to congratulate the Friars (Father Duenas) and Islanders (JFK) in winning the titles. They have set the barometer pretty high and we believe this historical tournament will be important for the development of our youth basketball program," said GBC National Basketball Development Officer, Dominic Sablan.

The Friars cruised to a huge 69-44 victory over the Guam High Panthers to take home the Varsity championship.

“One thing we leaned on and that we knew we had an advantage was that we were very deep,” Friars head coach Eddie Pelkey said,

Meanwhile, in the Junior Varsity division, the JFK Islanders defeated the Okkodo High Bulldogs, 80-68 to take home the title.

The Guam National High School Championships had a total of 16 teams with eight teams each in the two divisions and featured a single-elimination cross pool play.

The tournament was held at the University of Guam basketball gym in Maniglao, Guam from the 9th to 14th of March.
