France and Spain confirmed as co-hosts of FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021

MUNICH (Germany) - France and Spain have been awarded as co-hosts of FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 by the FIBA Europe Board today during the official announcement ceremony held at the Bayerischer Hof Hotel.

The ceremony was attended by FIBA President Horacio Muratore, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel, FIBA Executive Director Europe Kamil Novak, as well as members of the FIBA Europe Board and the nominated bidding city representatives.

Lyon and Valencia will be the two venues for the Group Phase and the Quarter-Finals. The Semi-Finals, the Third Place Game and the Final will all be played in Paris.  The host venues will be Palais des Sports de Gerland, Lyon, Pavelló Fuente de Sant Lluis, Valencia, and Bercy Arena, Paris.

FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 will take place in the month of June, with once again a 16 team draw.   The Draw for the Qualifiers, which are starting in November 2019, will take place on July 22 in Munich.

During today's ceremony in Munich, the Board heard presentations from France and Spain as a joint bid, Sweden and Ukraine.

The 37th edition of the FIBA Women's EuroBasket took place this month, with co-hosts Latvia and Serbia. The confirmed co-hosts for 2021 were the two strongest teams of the tournament with Spain continuing their incredible run of success, winning their fourth title and their third in the last four editions of the tournament.  France and Serbia rounded out the podium with second and third-place finishes, respectively, with Great Britain reaching the Semi-Finals for the first time and claiming fourth place overall.

FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel commented: "France and Spain are at the forefront of women's basketball in Europe, as evidenced by the fact they have met in the Finals of the past two editions of the FIBA Women's EuroBasket. We are very happy with today's decision to have the two best European basketball nations co-host this flagship event."
