Former Central African Republic international Gueret dies at 62

BANGUI (Central African Republic) - Former Central African Republic international and a leading basketball official in that country Roger Gueret nicknamed “Cheriza” has died. He was 62.

Gueret was part of the Central African nation’s golden generation that made a great impact on the continent and internationally.

The 1.95m (6ft4in) forward was revered for unrivalled athleticism, impressive ball handling and great shooting that were cardinal in spurring his teams to victory.

His ability to dominate on both ends of the court and deal significant damage to his opponents were crucial in sealing a move to Hit Tresor sporting club in 1975.

He’ll later on join Abidjan University Club in Cote d’Ivoire where he teamed up with current FIBA Africa Regional Director Alphonse Bile to fire the outfit to a West African Université Games silverware.

FIBA Africa Regional Director Alphonse Bile said : "It's always a shock when you learn of the death of a former teammate. Gueret was a great asset in the Central African and African basketball."

"We had a great time at the Abidjan Université Club. We were crowned Champions at the West African University Games in Yamoussokro, Cote d'Ivoire."

"I extend my sincere condolences to his family and to the Central African basketball family."

Cheriza’s promising career was however dented by recurrent knee injuries and despite quitting the court, the former ASOPT star man stayed attached to the sport organizing camps and grassroots projects in Bangui.
