Flamengo down Maccabi to lift Intercontinental Cup

RIO DE JANEIRO (Intercontinental Cup) - Flamengo defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv 90-77 on Sunday to win the 2014 Intercontinental Cup.

The Brazilians, roared on by their home fans, had lost the first contest on Friday, 69-66, so their aggregate margin of victory was 10 points.

The Israeli giants, winners of last season's Turkish Airlines Euroleague, had outscored Flamengo in the fourth quarter 23-15 en route to victory in the opener.

Jeremy Pargo poured in 21 points in that victory.

In the second meeting, Flamengo was the side to come good over the final 10 minutes.

Last season's FIBA Americas League winners outscored the visitors, 26-16 in the final frame to claim the 13-point triumph on the night.

Argentina international Nicolas Laprovittola, who appeared at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain, had 24 points for Flamengo.

Jerome Meyinsse also came up big for the Brazilians with 22 points.

A basket by Laprovittola early in the fourth quarter gave Flamengo a 66-63 lead and leveled the tie on aggregate.

Meyinsse then scored the go-ahead bucket in the tie.

His field goal made it 68-63 in favor of the Brazilians on the night.

Olympiacos captured the Intercontinental Cup last year as the reigning Euroleague champions.

They lifted the cup with a victory over Pinheiros Sky, but Flamengo are now flying the flag high for the FIBA Americas League.
