FIBA to live stream FIBA Melanesia Basketball Cup 2017

PORT MORESBY (FIBA Melanesia Cup 2017) – FIBA is thrilled to announce that all games of the FIBA Melanesia Cup 2017 will be streamed live on FIBA’s YouTube channel.

Thanks to a partnership between FIBA and EMTV in Papua New Guinea, people from all of the region will be able to tune in to see the best teams from Melanesia go head to head for the Melanesia Cup and a spot in the 2019 Pacific Games.  

EMTV is Papua New Guinea’s oldest and largest free-to-air TV broadcaster, this agreement appoints them as the ‘Official Broadcaster of the 2017 FIBA Melanesia Basketball Cup’.

The partnership was announced by FIBA Executive Director – Oceania, David Crocker, at the official tournament launch in Port Moresby earlier this month.

EMTV has already entered into discussions with several broadcasters from participating nations for possible relay telecasts.

“This is a great opportunity for FIBA and Basketball Federation of PNG to further showcase basketball in the region,” said Crocker.

EMTV CEO Matthew Park expressed his excitement about this agreement.

“[EMTV] will be using its experience from recent sports broadcast successes such as the 2015 Pacific Games, the 2016 OFC Nations Cup and the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, to put together another landmark coverage for Basketball within the country and the region”.

The FIBA Melanesia Basketball Cup will be held from 27 – 30 September 2017, with 16 matches total, and has confirmed participation by men’s and women’s teams from New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

The is one of the three new Oceania sub-zone competitions comprising of the Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia regions. Papua New Guinea will play host to Fiji, New Caledonia and Solomon Islands from the 26th of September to the 1st of October, 2017.

The top three (3) teams from this event will progress to the 2019 Pacific Games.
