FIBA Open 2020 confirmed with new concept

MIES (Switzerland) – Great opportunity for the boys and girls of the Lake Geneva region that want to play basketball after such a long break from team sports activity.

The FIBA Open, the biggest 3x3 basketball grassroots event in Switzerland, will take place on Saturday 5th September 2020 at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies, after the International Basketball Foundation has received green light from the authorities of the Canton of Vaud and the city of Mies.

In view of the current situation, and for the safety of all, the Foundation has issued strict security guidelines and changed the format of the FIBA Open for this year. The 2020 edition is open for boys and girls 14 years or younger old on the date of the tournament.

In order not to have more than 300 people at the same time on site, but to have the most possibilities to play, there will be 2 different sessions to play:

  •  U14 / U12 / U9 Morning: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  •  U14 / U12 Afternoon: 2 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

Registration for the new categories and sessions is open here.

"With this new concept, we are delighted to be able to provide opportunities for young people to play." explains Horacio Muratore, President of the Foundation. "We are very conscious about the responsibilities that come with such an event. This is why we will scrupulously follow the instructions of the authorities and provide the best possible safety measurements.”

"We had ambitious goals for 2020 with becoming one of the biggest 3x3 grassroots events in the world with a strong Basketball for Good element. But I hope we will come back in 2021, the year of the Olympic 3x3 premiere, for the 7th edition with a tournament bigger than ever and open to all" he concluded.

The following categories had to be cancelled for 2020: Open Men / Women / Family / Handibasket, U18 Girls / Boy / Mixed, U15 Girls / Boy (unless all players are 14 years old or under, see above).
