FIBA Honorary Referee Bernard Pasteris passes away
FRIBOURG (Switzerland) - International basketball is in mourning following the passing of FIBA Honorary Referee Bernard Pasteris.
FRIBOURG (Switzerland) - International basketball is in mourning following the passing of FIBA Honorary Referee Bernard Pasteris.
Born in 1937, Pasteris was an influential figure in Swiss basketball. He refereed around 200 games for FIBA in both men's and women's competitions, from 1973 to 1988. He also served as a Commissioner for 18 years following his refereeing career.
Pasteris took part in various European Championships in all categories and also refereed numerous European Cup games, as well as at the game celebrating FIBA's 50th anniversary,in Geneva in June 18, 1982.
The Swiss Basketball Federation also announced his death, calling Pasteris "a person entirely dedicated to the cause of our sport."
"Bernard, or Pépin, wore many hats in the world of Swiss basketball. He will always remain an emblematic character of our sport," said the Federation's President Giancarlo Sergi.
The Fribourg Basketball Association also paid a heartfelt tribute to Pasteris, who was known by all as Pépin.
