FIBA Europe Cup - Round of 32 Week 2 Review

MUNICH (FIBA Europe Cup) - We take a look back at the second week of action in the FIBA Europe Cup Round of 32 which saw 10 teams clinch their first victory at this stage of the competition.

And then there were three
Fraport Skyliners, Khimik Yuzhne and Türk Telekom Ankara are the three teams which remain undefeated in the FIBA Europe Cup after a total of eight games so far in the competition.

Port of Antwerp is no longer a member of this VIP club as their seven-game winning streak came to an abrupt end in Latvia on Tuesday.

The Belgian side trailed a superb BK Ventspils from start to finish and suffered a 97-80 loss in Group P action.

In order to keep their unblemished record, Khimik and Frankfurt had to showcase once again their undeniable ability to close out tight games.

The Ukrainian team edged out Belfius Mons-Hainaut 64-61 at home while the German side turned back Royal Hali Gaziantep and snatched a 71-66 win on the road.

Ankara trailed Boras Basket throughout the first half but after the interval the Turkish visitors poured in a staggering 40 points in the third frame to ride out 114-86 winners.

Big wins
In addition to the aforementioned result for Ventspils, Maccabi Rand Media, Lukoil Academic and Elan Chalon also celebrated great victories over powerful opponents.

Maccabi played host to ASVEL, a team that had impressed in both the FIBA Europe Cup and the French Pro A during the first three months of the season.

The Israeli team controlled the pace masterfully, scoring 20 points in transition during the first 25 minutes and then going to long possessions, to clinch an 82-71 win in Group O action.

Academic won the battle on the glass, came up with 14 offensive boards and snatched a comfortable 76-62 victory over CEZ Nymburk in Group P.

In Group R meanwhile Elan Chalon went 14-of-24 from beyond the arc and inflicted upon their hosts, Enisey, their heaviest defeat this season, 96-77.

Surprises of the week
Energia Targu-Jiu and Petrolina AEK Larnaca looked dead and buried midway through their respective Wednesday clashes but both ended up performing minor miracles, spurred by the support of their loyal home crowd.

The Romanian team completed an impressive 32-point turnaround as they trailed STB Le Havre by as many as 22 points but dominated their French guests in the final 15 minutes to grab a 78-68 win in Group S.

AEK clawed their way back from a 15-point deficit and prevailed 65-61 over a stunned Openjobmetis Varese, a result which Cypriot media hailed as a historical success.

Performance of the week
Marcus Haislip is, together with Aleksandar Rasic, the latest addition to the Ankara roster and both were playing their first FIBA Europe Cup game on Wednesday, although nobody would have guessed so.

The 35-year-old American forward made a strong argument for veteran basketball players as he dropped 28 points in 22 minutes on 11-for-20 shooting to help propel the Turkish side to their 114-86 win at Boras.

An honourable mention is due to a player much younger than Haislip, who played his first ever club game at European level on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Slovenian point guard Matic Rebec came up with 19 points, five assists and six steals on his debut, although it was not enough to prevent Krka Novo Mesto's 89-82 defeat at Kataja Basket.
