FIBA Asia Board holds its fourth meeting

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - The 4th Meeting of the FIBA Asia Board (term 2019-2023) took place via videoconference on Thursday, April 8, 2021.

The meeting, which was chaired by FIBA Asia President Sheikh Saud Al Thani and attended by FIBA Secretary General Mr. Andreas Zagklis, served to provide updates on the Region’s activities between July 2020 - March 2021 and to take necessary decisions regarding FIBA Asia’s 2021 events

The Board was presented with: 

  • The activity reports and programs carried out by the Regional Office’s Competitions, Communications, and National Federation and Sport departments.
  • A comprehensive report about the last two FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifier windows organized as protected environment tournaments (bubbles)
  • The audited report and financial statements of FIBA Asia for the year 2020, which it approved.
  • The latest updates about FIBA U15 Skill Challenge-Asia and FIBA ESPORTS Open III Asian Qualifiers.
  • The Regional Office’s upcoming “Special Projects” which are in line with FIBA’s three strategic pillars for the 2019-2023 cycle: Empower National Federations, Women in Basketball, and Enlarge FIBA Family.
  • A report on East Asia Super League, ASEAN Basketball League, and developments with regards to the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.

The Board confirmed that the postponed games of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers will take place between 10 and 20 June 2021 (hosts will be confirmed soon) to determine the ten teams that will join Bahrain and Lebanon, already qualified for the event. 

The sixteen teams list of FIBA Asia Cup 2021 will be completed with four additional teams through the Qualifying Tournament for third-ranked teams of the six Groups that will take place between 12 and 14 August 2021, in Jakarta. 

 The 2021 FIBA Asia events were among the main topics discussed during the meeting, with India confirmed as hosts of FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2021, while Lebanon and Iran confirmed as hosts of FIBA U16 Women’s and Men’s championships respectively.

 It was also decided during the meeting to convene the FIBA Asia mid-term congress in the second week of July, while the Sub-Zone Coordination Council meetings and Administrative Workshops to be organized during the period between late May and June.
