February window of AfroBasket Qualifiers and Women's AfroBasket dominate FIBA Africa Central Board meeting

ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - FIBA Regional Office Africa Central Board met earlier this month, via video conference, where key topics dominated the two-day event.

From December 9-10, the following decisions and subjects were top of the agenda:

FIBA Africa Competitions

The Central Board has given its Regional Director the right to designate two countries interested in hosting the third window of the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers in February, which will involve all five qualifying groups (A, B, C, D and E). 

The Regional Director for Africa was also given the right to hold talks with the four countries bidding to host the Final Phase of the FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2021, which will take place from the September 17-26, 2021. Those countries are Nigeria, Cameroon, Egypt and Cote d'Ivoire.

November Window of Qualifiers

Participants in the virtual conference were briefed about the successful November window of FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers held in Alexandria (Egypt) and Kigali (Rwanda), which involved an extraordinary effort by the international basketball community amidst the global pandemic

Basketball Development

During the the meeting, which run from December 9-10, it was decided to maintain the Materials and Equipment program (Balls, Chronometers, 3X3 and 5X5), the workshop organization of administrative managers of National Federations and webinars of technical managers, as well as the ongoing of Mini-Basket program.

National Federations Disputes

It's been agreed for the normalization process of functions at the Royal Moroccan Basketball Federation, which will lead to elections.

Investigations should be carried out before any decision is taken concerning elections held in the National Basketball Federations of Guinea and The Gambia.

FIBA Esports Open

FIBA Regional Office Africa welcomes the organization of the African Conference competition which took place in  November 2020.

The office encourages countries to work with their federations. The next edition is scheduled for the first quarter of 2021.

Other matters

The Final lists of the nine Sub-Zones and Council members must be forwarded to the FIBA Africa Secretariat.

The 2021 FIBA Africa Council meetings will be held online as was the case in 2020.
