European basketball mourns loss of friend and visionary Patrick Baumann

MUNICH - It is with great sadness that FIBA Europe learned of the passing of Mr Patrick Baumann, FIBA Secretary General and International Olympic Committee member.

In memory of Mr Baumann, a minute of silence will be held at all FIBA Europe competitions this coming week (FIBA Europe Cup; EuroLeague Women; SuperCup Women and EuroCup Women).

FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel said: "Patrick was a good friend, a visionary and a man who loved to see basketball progressing. His dedication in advancing the interests of our sport was exemplary and will be a guiding light for all of us in the FIBA family, for years to come.

"Patrick always strongly supported our Federations and Leagues and never ceased to initiate new projects or give his backing to good ideas generated in Europe. He knew that the benefit for the sport will go beyond its borders and eventually reach the global community.

"He will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and his two children."

FIBA Executive Director Europe Kamil Novak said: “This is a very sad day for basketball. Patrick Baumann was a man who served and defended the interests of European basketball from the very start of his career.

"Recently, he was instrumental in the creation of the Basketball Champions League, which is developing into a very successful competition, encompassing all of his true vision about sporting merit and the growth of our sport through development.

"We would like to extend our most sincere condolences go to his wife and children."
