EuroBasket Group Phase hosts all claim friendly triumphs

RIGA (EuroBasket 2015) - Latvia, Croatia, Germany and France all tasted victories in their latest warmup games for EuroBasket 2015.

The four sides will host Group Phase games in the competition, which tips off in less than a month, and each will be thinking of trying to get to the Final to clinch a spot in the Rio de Janeiro Games.

The teams that finish third, fourth, fifth and sixth will be invited to the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

In their first friendly of the summer, Latvia, who will be the home side in Group D, got 24 points from Dairis Bertans and edged Poland, 84-82.

The Baltic side trailed for much of the contest but came good late.

Bertans made a pair of free-throws to put Latvia ahead 82-81 and after the hosts got a stop on defense, he drew another foul sank both shots to give the hosts an 84-81 cushion with eight seconds left on the clock.

Latvia fouled AJ Slaughter to prevent the Polish guard from launching a potential game-tying three-ball and he converted just one of two at the line for the final score.

Croatia, the Group C hosts at EuroBasket 2015, followed up their last-second, buzzer-beating victory over New Zealand several days ago with a 74-62 triumph over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

I always want to win, no matter if it is in training and it is good that we showed we can play under pressure and win the game. - Perasovic

Bojan Bogdanovic led the way for the hosts with 15 points while Dario Saric added 13.

For Bosnia and Herzegovina, Andrija Stipanovic had 13 points and Elmedin Kikanovic finished with 10.

"I think we started the game well but in any case, Bosnia and Herzegovina had a lot more strength and aggression than us," Croatia coach Velimir Perasovic said.

"At this stage of preparations it is obvious that we are not ready, neither physically nor mentally, but the key right now is to turn into a team that will know how to fight and how to help one another."

Germany, the Group B hosts, extended their winning streak in preparation games for EuroBasket 2015 to four by clinching a 68-61 victory over the Czech Republic at home.

Dennis Schroder paced the German team with 17 points and three assists and Robin Benzing added 12 points.

Meanwhile Tibor Pleiss finished with a game-high 12 rebounds to go with his two points, as Germany out-rebounded the Czechs 40 to 29.

Today I have seen a lot of positives. - Fleming

"The Czech team played very well in the first half but we came back from the break with an awful lot of energy," Germany coach Chris Fleming said.

"Of course, it will still take time for everybody to be fully integrated in the team but Dennis led us in the second half and Maodo Lo was very good, too.

"There is a great enthusiasm in the team, everybody wants to play fast and with high intensity."

France claimed on Friday their first win since the start of preparations for September's big event as they prevailed 78-65 over Serbia in front of a 6,000-strong home crowd in Nancy.

Tony Parker came up with 16 points and dished out a game-high 7 assists while Nicolas Batum had 15 points.

Rudy Gobert chipped in 10 points and corralled 6 rebounds.

For Serbia, who played without Milos Teodosic and Zoran Erceg as they are both nursing minor injuries, Bogdan Bogdanovic finished with 16 points.

"What we will remember from this game is that we took a step forward and that it promises to be an interesting and particularly challenging return leg in Belgrade," France coach Vincent Collet said, referring to the next warm-up game between the sides on 12 August.
