Czech Republic stun FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series favorites in Poitiers

POITIERS (France) - #6 seed Czech Republic won the 3rd stop of the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series 2019 in Poitiers, France on July 5-6, 2019.

After a last-place finish at the Turin Stop and a 21-9 loss in the pool phase against Poland, it was hard to predict the World Cup 2016 winners would go very far in the competition.

And yet, the Czechs won their next 3 games, against the World Cup 2018 winners (Italy), the reigning European champs (France) and Canada in the final (21-19).

Playmaker Kristýna Minarovičová led the team in scoring in Poitiers. She had a game-high 10 points in the final, including the game-winning drive.

Without her twin sister Michelle, who broke a finger in Turin, Katherine Plouffe was a force in Poitiers. She led her team in scoring and brought it all the way to the final, just 3 weeks after finishing 4th in Italy.

Standings

1. Czech Republic
2. Canada
3. France
4. Netherlands
5. Italy
6. Romania
7. Poland

Despite finishing 3rd, France remain 1st in the Women’s Series overall standings with 220 points. The next 4 teams are separated by just 10 points. Canada rank 2nd (140 points) while Czech Republic are 3rd (135 points). Italy and Netherlands sit in 4th and 5th place respectively with 130 points apiece.

The 4th stop of the Women’s Series will be staged in Ekaterinburg, Russia on July 9-10.
