Communications and media workshop concludes in Colombo

COLOMBO (Sri Lanka) - The FIBA Regional Office – Asia successfully concluded a communications and media workshop in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 21-23 October 2021.

The workshop is part of the Regional Office’s continuous efforts to improve the communications and media capability of its national federations, promoting the national team and increasing fan engagement on digital and social media.

The importance of creating a content plan was underlined, and the first day of the workshop concentrated on how to create a communications strategy and why having one was important.

"It was a pleasure to sit in this workshop. We are proud to be the first sporting body in Sri Lanka to have its own digital identity as @srilanka.basketball and to have a better understanding of the latest digital media and marketing concepts in sports, said Sri Lanka Basketball Federation (SLBF) president Alelian Gunawarde.

"The new SLBF committee and I, are very keen to make Sri Lanka's digital and social media channels all about the players and not about politics or the administration. We hope to convey this clearly too."

"It was indeed a very successful workshop with lot of information, case studies, interactive sessions and more importantly how to organize the SLBF digital and communication for future activities. The enthusiasm among participants was a testimony and I am pretty confident that we can bring Sri Lanka basketball into the next level,  said SLBF Secretary General Mr. Chandana Liyanage.

"The new SLBF administration would want to develop the game, make it more popular and give the best for our national teams to perform. In this endeavors this workshop gives us an insight & clear guidance how to make it happen with proper digital marketing & communication strategy, he added.

Promoting women’s basketball was another topic discussed through the three days. The participants were given ideas and communication tools on how to promote women’s basketball in creative ways and through cross promotion with other sports.

The three-day workshop was wrapped up with a visit to Sugathadasa Indoor Sports Complex, where a demonstration was made on where and how to set up the media facilities in the arena.
