Canada's Murray leads World to Nike Hoop Summit win over USA

PORTLAND - Returning Canadian guard Jamal Murray led the way with 30 points as the World Select Team beat the United States 103-101 in the 2015 Nike Hoop Summit.

Murray added five assists as the World team collected their third victory in the last four showcase games against the elite American talent, moving the all-time record to 6-12 against the USA.

"It was exciting. Obviously it was very satisfying to win, always. It's never easy to lose, and I'm just happy we were able to pull out the win," said World Select Team coach Roy Rana, who improved his record to 3-2 with the World team.

"It's been a phenomenal group, real character kids, a lot of fun to coach, willing to make sacrifices for each other. And that is not easy to do when you have kids as touted as they are come together in a week as quickly as they did from all over the world and play as a team, which they did today."

Murray, the star of Canada's team at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship, said playing in last year's Hoop Summit helped him perform well again in Portland.

"Well I kind of knew what it was already about and kind of knew how the USA was going to play, they were going to play very aggressive and they did. But just coming out here and play our game and stick to the script and just don’t try to do too much and just help the team make the right plays," said Murray, who had 10 points, five rebounds and five assists in the 2014 edition of the annual game.

Australian star Ben Simmons nearly had a triple double with 13 points, nine rebounds and nine assists as well as two steals.

"I'm just happy I'm here, happy we got the win. It's always hard playing with a new team, and playing with guys that don't even speak English. But I've enjoyed this event," said the 18-year-old, whose nine assists set a World Team record.

Skal Labissiere chipped in 21 points, six rebounds and six of the World Team's record-breaking 12 blocked shots. Cheick Diallo added 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks and Thon Maker added a game-high 10 rebounds for the World Team.

The USA team was paced by Luke Kennard with 22 points while Jalen Brunson and Brandon Ingram both had 12 points, Allonzo Trier scored 11 and Malik Newman chipped in 10 points. Isaiah Briscoe added nine points, nine assists and three steals for the USA team.

"The effort was pretty tremendous for both teams, credit to the World team," Kennard said. "They have some great guys. It was a battle to the end. We were down 14, we never really got discouraged. We were still all in. We fell at the end, but we gave some good effort."

The International U19 team wasted a 14-point first half lead and fell behind by three points in the fourth quarter. Rana's team scored seven straight points and never trailed again. Kennard's two free throws tied the game at 98-98 with 2:22 minutes left. The Americans made just 1-of-4 free throws and 1-of-5 shots in the final 1:47.

After Kennard's fastbreak dunk made it 102-101 with 13.9 seconds left, Labissiere made one of two free throws. Kennard then had his shot blocked and Trier potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer was off target.

"Whenever a game, no matter what level, comes down to the last possession, it shows both teams competing and how much they wanted to win," said USA coach Eric Flannery.

"To have the ball in our hands with a chance to tie or win, it says a lot about their effort and their attitude throughout the course of the game. So, I'm just very proud of our guys and our team."
