Canada will host a historic game for female high school students

TORONTO - The best 24 female basketball players in Canadian high schools have been invited to the first edition of an all-women’s game, as part of the All Canadian Basketball Games, which will take place in the facilities of the University of Toronto on March 31.

“Women's basketball in Canada has had an immense growth during the past years. It's exciting to showcase the talent and the hard work of all the best student athletes throughout the country,” said Linh Nguyen, High-Performance and Selecting Committee Director.

The young players that are selected will not only play in the games but will also participate in press conference and skills competitions during the weekend.

The event will also have a junior edition, were the best talents of the ninth and tenth grade in the country will play a match as a prelude to the main game.

Furthermore, six Canadian prospects (4 men and 2 women) were selected among the best 63 in the world to participate in the Basketball Without Borders (BWB) camp offered by the NBA and FIBA during the All-Stars Weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina.

For three days, participants had activities in and out of the court to work on their movement efficiency, develop game skills, shot and agility competitions, and other daily workshops focused on health, leadership and communications.

This camp, a result of the global efforts by FIBA and the NBA to develop basketball and reach communities, has impacted more than 3,300 participants of 129 nations during the last 18 years. Some 55 former program attendees have been drafted by the NBA or signed as free agents. In total, there have been 56 camps in 35 cities of 28 countries and six continents, where more than 290 professional players have been their resources.

Canada’s national men’s team also offered this week free workshops in St. Johns to around 30 children and young players before the game against Venezuela, as part of the sixth window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Americas Qualifiers 2019. The Canadians eventually won the game and qualified as first-place team in Group F, with a record of ten wins and two defeats.
