BFPNG celebrate Olympic Day with hoops clinic

Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea) - The drizzle of rain is not enough to stop Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) in celebrating Olympic Day with a Hoops For Health clinic at the Ela Beach Basketball courts in Port Moresby.

BFPNG organized a hoops clinic to join the annual celebration of Olympic Movement activity promoting mass participation of various sports. with the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee.

Stephen Damien, BFPNG's Executive Officer shared the Federation's objective in joining the festivities and also their delight with the participants despite the unfavorable weather.

"PNG Basketball used the opportunity to engage with the community through basketball games that the villagers are familiar with while spreading the message of learning the values of the Olympic movement," he said.

"We were also pleasantly surprised with the turnout in spite of the rain in the morning that made the basketball court a bit wet," he added.

The Olympic Day celebration also included exhibitions from Fencing, Judo, and boxing.

One of the participants, Ezekiel Billy was grateful for the activity organized by BFPNG and stated that his community was clueless about Olympic Day before their participation last Sunday.

"We really want to thank BFPNG and PNGOC for organizing this activity. We were not really aware of this annual Olympic Day until today(Sunday). It was a great idea to host the activity in public, especially at Ela Beach basketball courts and directly engage with the community, in our case the Wanigela Village at Koki"," he said.

Damien is proud of the work BFPNG has been implementing in the communities while also commending the help BFPNG has received from their partners.

"As a federation, we are very proud of our work on how we can help and impact communities positively in all our programs. We will continue spreading the game of basketball and its positive effects," he said.

"But all of this is possible because of partners and sponsors like the Australian Aid, FIBA, PNGOC, and all our volunteers. We are all part of this" he ended.
