Basketball world loses Blagoja Georgievski

SKOPJE (North Macedonia) - The basketball world lost Macedonian great Blagoja Georgievski, who tragically passed on Thursday morning.

Born on October 15, 1950 in Skopje, he spent most of his playing career at Rabotnicki, a club that competed in the First Yugoslav Basketball League, reaching the Semi-Finals of the Cup Winners' Cup in the 1976-1976 season.

Georgievski was also a member of the youth team of Yugoslavia, capturing the 1970 Balkan Games title in Rijeka. During the Youth European Championships in Athens, the team finished fourth. 

As part of the Yugoslav senior national team, Georgievski won silver at the FIBA EuroBasket 1971 and participated at the 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.

He won Olympic silver in 1976, which to this day stands as the biggest achievement by a Macedonian basketball player in the history of the sport.

Georgievski also served as the first Secretary General of the Basketball Federation of North Macedonia following independence. He also worked as the coach of the country's senior national team.

He was involved in other capacities as well, most notably as member of the Managing Board and Assembly of the Macedonian Olympic Committee, President of the Olympic Council of the Macedonian Olympic Committee, and was also Vice President of the highest sports institution in North Macedonia.

He has been a member of the Club of Greats of the Macedonian Olympic Committee since 1997.
