Australia's referee instructors introduced to new educational programs

CANBERRA – In January of this year, FIBA Referee Manager – Oceania, Albert Joseph visited the Australian Institute of Sport to conduct an elite level referee workshop on behalf of Basketball Australia in conjunction with FIBA.

During this workshop, Basketball Australia and Mr. Joseph presented two national referee programs, the first of which BA re-introduced the Basketball Australia National Referee Development Program (NRDP) and the second was the brand new Basketball Australia National Referee Instructors Program.

The NRDP aims to enhance Basketball Australia’s referee talent identification process, it will be instrumental in ensuring the continued growth and development of Australian referees.

“The NRDP is an important part of our National Referee pathway,” said Basketball Australia’s Officials Manager Peter Carey.

“It is a program to identify some of the most promising referees from each state and fast track their development with some intensive coaching.”

The NRDP was re-visited at the recent Australian National Basketball League (NBL) combine. Basketball Australia collaborated with the NBL to offer additional development to the NRDP Referees during the event from the 17th to 18th of April in Melbourne.

The brand new Basketball Australia National Referee Instructors Program is a comprehensive guide for all referee instructors working at the national level (NBL, WNBL and Australian Junior Championships) plus all state referee managers.

“It is great to see Basketball Australia joining FIBA in its committed focus on referee instructor education,” commented Mr. Joseph.

“The program [National Referee Instructors Program] is very intensive and aimed at enhancing the learning and educating skills of the instructors so they can develop the service and training offered to both elite and aspiring referees.”

FIBA and Basketball Australia have plans to conduct joint referee educational ventures annually.
