Angola launch search for new coach for FIBA AfroBasket 2017

LUANDA (FIBA AfroBasket 2017) - Angola had a successful FIBA AfroBasket Zone 6 qualifier but they need a head coach for the Final Round in August in Congo-Brazzaville.

Following the unexpected departure of Carlos Dinis, a week before the regional qualifier, his assistant Manuel Silva led the team to a 4-0 mark in Lusaka last month.

Dinis had been re-appointed to the job, but personal reasons forced him to step down.

His departure leaves the door open for a new head coach for the FIBA AfroBasket 2017, which will take place in Congo-Brazzaville from 19-30 August.

While some argue that Silva should be kept at the helm of the 11-time African champions, other local observers insist that his commitments to the Angolan U19 men’s team might become incompatible with the men's team schedule.

Silva’s U19 team will represent the country at the FIBA U19 World Championship in Cairo from 1- 9 July.

Three months in charge of the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB)'s new board is expected to announce the new coaching staff next week.

Whoever is appointed to the job, will become Angola's seventh head coach dating back to 2007.
