Americas Zone Board meets with World Cup Qualifiers and Youth Development as main objective

MIAMI (Americas) – The FIBA Americas Zone Board met on November 17, 2018 in Miami, Florida, to discuss a wide range of topics and make decisions on future events in the Zone.

FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers

Weeks away from the start of the fifth window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers, the Zone Executive and Zone Board took an in depth look at the Regional Office implementation plan for the window that lays ahead during the last stops on the Road to China 2019.

2019 Events Calendar

The Zone Board approved the 2019 Events Calendar for the Americas and received an update on the Regional Office’s efforts to secure hosts for the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, and the FIBA U16 Americas Championships, as well as the CONSUBASQUET and CONCENCABA Sub-Zone competitions and the CBC and COCABA competitions.

Youth Development Program

A new Youth Development Program was approved with the objective of seeking and developing elite young players in the Americas and establish a process for tracking and monitoring the future stars of basketball at the continental level. The Program will tip-off in Campinas, Brasil in December.

New Club Competition Project

A new club competition project was introduced focused on strong relationships between FIBA, the National Federations and the National Leagues, as well as creating a strong ecosystem for basketball in the continent. Details on the new club competition will be made available at a later date.

Women’s New Competition System

Americas Zone Board received a detailed presentation on the new system that sets out the road to all of FIBA's main women's events - the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament and the FIBA Women's Continental Cups - over a four-year cycle.

The FIBA Americas Zone Executive and Zone Board observed a minute of silence and paid tribute to late FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann.

FIBA President Horacio Muratore set the tone for both meetings centered on the growth of the region to make key decisions on strategic topics regarding the future of FIBA in the Americas. The FIBA Americas Board also received detailed reports on National Federations, FIBA’s Governance Structure as it relates to Zone Elections in the coming year, and was presented by the FIBA Americas President Usie Richards and the Executive Director Carlos Alves a business plan that was unanimously approved as the Budget for 2019. 

The Zone Board meeting was attended by members Carlos Beltran, Sabrina Mitchell, Ricardo Siri and Modesto Robledo, Zone Executive Committee Member-at-Large Eduardo Bazzi, CBC President Glyne Clarke, COCABA President Yamil Bukele, CONCENCABA President Ruperto Herrera, CONSUBASQUET President Gerasime Bozikis, Americas Treasurer Jim Tooley, Americas Executive Director Carlos Alves, Americas 1st Vice President Michele O’keefe (CAN), FIBA Americas President Usie Richards, and FIBA President Horacio Muratore. It was also attended by guests Jose Luis Saez, and National Federation Presidents Federico Susbielles (Argentina), Yum Ramos (Puerto Rico) and Rafael Uribe (Dominican Republic), along with Brazilian Basketball Confederation Secretary General Carlos Roberto Fontanelle.
