Alba Berlin don't want to get overconfident after win over Spurs

BERLIN (NBA/German Beko BBL) - German Beko BBL club Alba Berlin hope their thrilling upset of the reigning NBA champions San Antonio Spurs can give them confidence at the start of the 2014-15 season - but not too much.

The German Cup winners Berlin knocked off the Spurs 94-93 on Jamel McLean's floater at the buzzer as part of the NBA Global Games. It was the 118th time NBA teams have faced off against non-NBA clubs, and it was the 15th time the non-NBA team won - with Maccabi Tel Aviv leading the way with four wins and both Barcelona and CSKA Moscow owning three wins.

Berlin, who came back to win despite trailing by four points with nine seconds left, know the significance of their win at the o2 World in the German capital.

"It feels good. Guys like (Tony) Parker, (Tim) Duncan and (Manu) Ginobili are going to be in the Hall of Fame one day. So just to share the court was a wonderful experience. But we said beforehand that we're going to come out there and not back down. We play ball just like they do. And we gave it our all," said Berlin guard Cliff Hammonds.

"We have to take it and build a little bit of confidence off that. It's not every day that a team from Germany gets to play against the (NBA) champions, let alone beat them. Hopefully we can take the confidence that we got from that game and go with it into more games."

Berlin don't have time to really celebrate as they take on Telekom Baskets Bonn on Friday, just two days after beating the Spurs. And Sasa Obradovic's team then takes on ratiopharm ulm on Sunday.

"Beating the (NBA) champions for us is still like a dream. Honestly, I didn't think we could play the game but we did it. I'm extremely satisfied with the way we played the game," said the Berlin coach Obradovic.

"Now we have to stay on the ground after an extremely big win and repeat everything on Friday and Sunday which is actually even more important for us."

Reggie Redding said the team can't get too high after the win.

"For us to beat them, it's a good win for us. They're the best team in the world. Hopefully it gives us a little confidence but not too much. We have to try to not let it get to our heads. But we're going to enjoy it like anybody should," said Redding, who hit a three-pointer and grabbed the steal to set up McLean's game-winner.

Berlin opened the Beko BBL season with a 2-0 record as well as convincing victory over reigning league winners Bayern Munich in the Champions Cup, which pits the previous season's league and cup winners against one another.

"This is another step on a long road that we have ahead of us this season. We can't get too excited about it. We can see that we have taken another step forward," added Akeem Vargas.
