AfroBasket Women debutant Gala eager to help Angola to third title

LUANDA (AfroBasket Women 2015) - Two-time reigning champions Angola will head to AfroBasket Women 2015 looking to achieve what no team has done in more than 30 years: win the continental title three times in a row.

Between 1974 and 1984, Senegal won all five editions of the championship. Since then, no team has managed to claim more than two consecutive titles.

The Angolans won in Bamako, Mali in 2011 and in Maputo, Mozambique two years ago. They will go for a third at the 12-team continental championship taking place in Yaounde, Cameroon (24 September-3 October).

Winning three titles in a row is the target eyed by players from the younger generation, who joined the group following the last AfroBasket Women.

One of those players is Rosa Maria Gala who, as an 18-year-old, was one of Angola's final cuts in 2013. She watched her country win a second consecutive continental title from the outside.

The 1.73m guard made her senior national team debut last summer, representing Angola at the 2014 FIBA Women’s World Championship in Turkey and had one of the top plays of the tournament.

With AfroBasket Women 2015 just a few months away, Gala does not hide her dream of being in Yaounde to represent her country.

I think Angola is the best team on the continent and we have to fight to keep that status. - Gala

"I am eager to be called [up]. I will try my best in order to help my country win its third continental title," she told FIBA.com.

"All countries participating in AfroBasket Women 2015 have players of great qualities who want to take our place."

Gala, the top scorer at the 2011 FIBA Africa U16 Women's Championship, is seen as a key part of Angola's future, along with other young players including Artemis Afonso and Ana Goncalves.

This young generation of rising stars certainly has great role models to look up to with the likes of Nacissela Mauricio - the MVP of the last two AfroBasket Women tournaments - Nadir Manuel and Sonia Guadalupe, who all have great experience in international competitions.

The 20-year-old playmaker, who dreams of one day playing in the WNBA, revealed the source of her inspiration.

"I had the opportunity to follow many African women players and I'm really impressed by the qualities of Nigeria's Sarah Ogoke," she explained.

"The idea of challenging players of such level in September gives me more motivation."

The winner of AfroBasket Women 2015 will qualify directly for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, while the teams ranked second and third will compete in the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
