USA - Youth world champs lead USA to Hoop Summit victory

PORTLAND (Nike Hoop Summit) - Former youth world champions Jahlil Okafor, Tyus Jones and Justise Winslow restored pride back to the United States in the Nike Hoop Summit as they combined for 43 points in helping the USA to a 84-73 victory over the World Select Team in snapping a two-game losing streak.

Okafor, who won the titles at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship and the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, collected 14 points and 10 rebounds while Winslow, who played on both title-winning teams as well, led the Americans with 16 points off the bench. And the 2012 U17 champion Jones added 13 points, six assists and five steals.

The trio of Americans will all team up at Duke University starting in the fall of 2014 while Kansas-bound Kelly Oubre added 14 points for the Americans.

"I think it was a great game. Both teams played extremely well. Our team just wanted to focus on getting the job done no matter what it took, and that's what we did," said Jones, who scored 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter.

The game was tied at 61 after 30 minutes before the Americans out-scored the World team 23-11 in the fourth quarter to pull away with the win, which improved the Americans' Hoop Summit record to 12-5.

"The World team definitely made us earn it, but each and every one of the guys in the locker room gave it their all so we're all happy with it," said Jones.

USA coach Mike Jones praised the performance of the guard.

"It was incredible how he (Tyus) literally took the game over. He was very poised. He didn't turn the ball over and he made us run what we needed to run," he said.

Emmanuel Mudiay from the Democratic Republic of Congo led the World team with 20 points to go with three assists and three steals while Canada's Jamal Murray scored 10 points.

The World Select Team big man duo of Canadian power forward Trey Lyles and Dominican Republic center Karl Towns Jr were in foul trouble throughout the game and finished with nine points and 11 rebounds and six points and eight rebounds, respectively.

"It's such an incredible week for everybody involved, but losing is losing and it never feels good and I know it's tough on these kids," said World team coach Roy Rana.

"We weren't a sharp as I hoped we would have been, but that's basketball. When you have a one-game series, anything can happen on any given day and all credit to the USA because they were better than us today and they made the runs when they needed to and I think, in the end, that was the difference maker."

The Nike Hoop Summit is an annual meeting of the best U19 players in the world.

It is also a precursor for many of the young stars to the NBA as 151 Hoop Summit alumni have been drafted by NBA teams, including 11 in the 2013 draft.

Seven former Summit players have been selected number one overall, including the last four first overall picks.
