USA - The supporting cast

MIAMI (NBA) - There are many qualities that a title-hungry superstar must possess.

One is a willingness to let teammates lead.

Four-time NBA MVP LeBron James of the Miami Heat did just that on Sunday night, with playmaker Mario Chalmers providing a spark when Game 2 of the Finals was in the balance against the San Antonio Spurs.

The visitors, having prevailed 92-88 in Game 1, were in excellent position to take a 2-0 stranglehold on the series with a 62-61 advantage late in the third quarter.

Chalmers' three-point play ignited a 42-22 run to close the contest for Miami, who won 103-84.

He finished six of 12 from the floor overall and scored 19 points.

"He has to play big for us in multiple facets," James said of Chalmers.

"Defensively, he's guarding arguably the best point guard (Tony Parker) in the league, but he also has to make Tony work on the defensive end."

James had the luxury of playing alongside an NBA All-Star cast at the Olympics last summer, where Team USA captured a second straight gold medal.

He showed an ability to carry the Americans on his back in stretches of games.

With Miami, he is normally the protagonist, yet James is showing that he trusts his teammates, too, and not just the other members of the Heat's 'Big Three' - Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

"Ray (Allen), Mike Miller and Rio (Mario Chalmers) made big play after big play for us," James said.

"My shooters just need a little bit of room."

Miller was three of three from the arc, Allen three of five and Chalmers two of four.

James, meanwhile, despite being held to 17 points on seven of 17 shooting, still ended up making the play that is going to be shown over and over again on highlight reels.

With San Antonio's Tiago Splitter closing in on a thunderous dunk in the fourth quarter, James leapt high and with one hand blocked the Brazil national team center's slam attempt.

To continue to have success in San Antonio, where the next three games are to be held, Miami will have to get production out of its less famous but very important players.

James knows it.

"I think the supporting cast is really why both teams are here," he said.

"They've been making an impact all year long, and they feel like their supporting cast is better. We feel like our supporting cast is better. It’s who goes out and do it each and every night to help seal wins."
