SLO - Erjavec takes over as president of national federation

LJUBLJANA - The Basketball Federation of Slovenia have a new leader at their helm after Matej Erjavec was named as President of the organisation at a General Assembly meeting over the weekend.

He takes over from Roman Volcic, who held the prestigious position between 2010-2014 - a period which included the preparation for and hosting of EuroBasket 2013, the biggest sporting event in the country's history.

Erjavec was given a mandate to lead Slovenian basketball with immediate effect and will be at the helm until 2018.

A former player with a trio of Slovenian clubs in Jance, Parklji and Slovan, he was the sole candidate for the position and enjoyed a unanimous seal of approval from all federation members.

Also a highly-successful lawyer with his own practice, Erjavec participated in the organisation of EuroBasket 2013, as an external law expert.

Speaking after his election, he said: "There is no doubt that the federation has become one of the most significant and respected sports organisations in Slovenia due to the work done so far - the constant improvement of the office organisation, the national teams, marketing and an excellent EuroBasket 2013.

"I have taken over a federation in good health and I strongly believe it will stay the same or be even better in the future.

"I will try to provide as much financial means as needed for the organisation and for the popularisation of basketball in Slovenia.

"I am also aware of the situation and crisis the clubs are facing currently and will try to help them as much as possible."

The 41-year-old is the 10th president in the history of the Basketball Federation of Slovenia and will work closely with former national team captain, Radoslav Nesterovic, who won a second term as Vice-President.

Meanwhile, Gregor Griljc, a representative of Sony - one of the federation's main sponsors - will also serve as a Vice-President.
