STRATHFIELDSAYE teenager Kevin Probert will soon be bound for Beijing, China, for another basketball experience.

A six-day Nike-sponsored skills camp will involve 60 selected players from the Asia-Pacific region.

A guard, Probert is among 19 contenders for the Australian Emus team to compete at next year's FIBA U19 World Championship.

The trip to Beijing begins on June 13 and follows a successful hit-out for Probert and the Australian young men's squad at last month's Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Germany.
The young Aussies achieved a win-loss record of 4-2 to be ninth overall.

For Probert, the German trip was his first overseas.

"It was an incredible experience, not just the basketball matches, but adjusting to travel as well." On court, Probert switched between point guard and off guard as the Australians beat Israel, Sweden, Ukraine and China. "The losses were to France by five points, and to Lithuania by nine. "France won the championship final by 30 points." In Beijing, Probert will receive tips from some of the world's leading coaches.

Being in China is another important step toward Probert achieving his goal of being part of the Australian Emus world title defence in July, 2007.

Before he heads to Beijing, Probert will be at the AIS in Canberra from June 7-10 for a selection trial for Australia's team to compete in the William Jones Cup in Taiwan in July.

The heat is right on as Probert and the rest of the Emus squad prepare for the Oceania qualifying series against New Zealand at Nowra, NSW, in August.

The La Trobe University Bendigo first-year primary teaching student spends a lot of time on court playing and training and also passing on tips to the "next generation" of basketball stars through a series of clinics.
