PR N°02 - FIBA 2009-2011 television rights almost sold out
GENEVA (FIBA) - FIBA's Television Department has provided good news for the start of 2009 by announcing the conclusion of television contracts for the 2009-2011 FIBA Programme of Events in 140 countries.
Agreements have been secured in all of the major basketball markets and in other countries the broadcasters are yet to be named although the rights have been granted. Only a few markets still remain to be closed.
Online rights have been carved out in many territories and FIBA will soon be providing details of its online broadcast strategy.
Depending on the territory concerned, the television packages basically include the relevant 2009 and 2011 FIBA Continental Championships and the 2010 FIBA World Championships.
"We are extremely pleased with the current situation, which will give us time for safe and proper planning of our media rights," said FIBA Secretary General and IOC member Patrick Baumann. "Television is and will stay our main distribution channel for our events. Most of the broadcast partners for the 2009-2011 cycle are long-term partners of FIBA which is a sign of their satisfaction with the product."
FIBA was one of the first International Sports Federations to become totally responsible for its television distribution in creating an in-house television department in 2003. For further information, please contact tv@fiba.com.
In addition FIBA, in partnership with the Sportsbrand company, produces a weekly television show called 'FIBA World Basketball' that is aired in over 160 countries.
