Egypt win third FIBA Africa U18 title over Tunisia

ANTANANARIVO (FIBA Africa U18 Championship) - Mohamed Abdelrahman poured in 24 points as Egypt knocked off Tunisia, 80-69, to win the 2014 FIBA Africa U18 Championship for their third title in that age group in the past four events.

Basem Alian added 20 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks and Mohamed Mahmoud added 18 points for Egypt, who beat Tunisia in a repeat of the 2010 U18 Final. By reaching the Final in Antananarivo, Madagascar, both Egypt and Tunisia qualified for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship.

The other teams to have already booked spots for the U19 Worlds are hosts Greece, United States, Argentina, Canada, Dominican Republic, Turkey, Serbia, Croatia, Spain and Italy. Three teams will advance from Asia and one from Oceania.

In Sunday's Final, Egypt used a 12-0 run early in the fourth quarter to beat Tunisia. Abdelrahman scored nine of Egypt's points in the decisive spurt. He will now head to Dubai to join the Egyptian team at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship.

Jaouhar Jaouadi had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the loss, while Fedi Dallai added 16 and 11 for Tunisia.

In the Third-Place Game, N'Faly Kanoute scored 18 points to pace five Mali players in double figures in a 75-65 win over Angola. Mamoudou Diarra added 10 points and 15 rebounds for Mali, who have collected a second place and four third placed finishes in the last eight tournaments.

Egypt added another U18 title to those in 1977, 1984, 2008 and 2010. Their five crowns are two fewer than Nigeria, whose seventh and last championship came in 2006. Besides finishing second in 2010 and in Antananarivo, Tunisia also have a third-place showing in 1977.

The 2012 winners Senegal did not play in the tournament in Madagascar, while 2012 finalists Cote d'Ivoire lost to Mali in the Quarter-Finals.

Mali were hoping to return to the U19 Worlds for the first time since making their debut in 2007. And they were leading 72-69 in the Semi-Final against Egypt when Sagaba Konate failed to convert a three-point play with 22 seconds left. Egypt's Ahmed Elsayed made two free-throws with 17 seconds left and then added a basket with 11 seconds remaining to give Egypt the lead 73-72.

Konate turned the ball over in the final seconds to Alian and Egypt were back in the Final, thanks to 21 points for Elsayed.

Diarra (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Konate (12, 11) both had double-doubles in the loss.

In the other Semi-Final, Tunisia were held to seven points in the fourth quarter but managed to win 61-57 over Angola, who had trailed by 13 points with nine minutes to play.

Angola trimmed the gap to 57-55 inside the last minute but Achref Gannouni made four of four free throws for Tunisia in the final 36 seconds to fend off the comeback.

Gannouni and Mahmoud Hajri both had 22 points while Ahmad Dhif collected 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Angola, who won their last of four U18 titles in 1988, were paced by Gerson da Silva Domingos with 22 points.
