HOUSTON (NBA) - Houston Rockets star Yao Ming is now a father.

The 7ft 6in Yao’s wife, Ye Li, gave birth to a baby girl on Friday in Houston.

"I am very excited about the arrival of our daughter," Yao said in a statement.

"This is a very special moment in our lives and we thank everyone for their kindness and support."

Yao missed the entire NBA season after having surgery on his foot and ankle.

He has begun running on a treadmill and expects to resume full basketball activity by the end of the month.
