BRA - Guilherme salutes Universo veterans

BRASILIA (Liga Nacional de Basquete) – Title wins are becoming the norm for Brazil international Guilherme Giovannoni.

Last year at Virtus Bologna, the 2.04m forward celebrated a EuroChallenge victory and he followed that up with a gold-medal run at the FIBA Americas Championship in San Juan.

Brazil beat Puerto Rico in the Final.

On Sunday, Guilherme again reached the top and this time, it was with Universo/BRB in his native Brazil.

The Brasilia team, beaten in the championship series the previous two years by Flamengo, avenged those setbacks with a 3-2 series triumph that was clinched with Sunday’s thrilling 76-74 win.

"The title is much deserved for all of us, but I dedicate it especially to my teammates who were here in the championships (series) and were much criticized because of two consecutive years that Universo lost to Flamengo,” he said.

“They were awesome and showed that they are the best players in Brazil.”

Guilherme will now have a much deserved rest before he joins up with Brazil’s other veterans on July 19 to begin preparing for the FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

The Brazilians will play all of their games in Istanbul.

They are in Preliminary Round Group B with Team USA, Slovenia, Croatia, Iran and Tunisia.
