KAYSERI (2010 FIBA World Championship) – Luis Scola led Argentina to another win, this time against Angola by the score of 91-70 in day 3 of Group A in the FIBA World Championship.

Scola scored 21 of the first 42 points by Argentina and finished with 32 points. The Argentinians were once again without center Fabricio Oberto (gastroenteritis) and used their bench to rest their starters as all their games have been very intense.

Argentina started the game with a 6-0 run that was answered with a quick 8-0 run by Angola. The Argentinians used Scola inside, who was effective, and led them past Angola as they won the first quarter 23-20. Scola had 17 points in the first quarter.

Then in the second quarter Argentina started to use their bench player, who came in and did their job on both sides of the court to give them a 45-32 halftime lead. Paolo Quintero scored 7 points from the bench and Roman Gonzalez added 4.

Angola didn’t give up and took advantage of the Argentinians relaxing on defense to make a 14-2 run and be down 62-59 after a two pointer from Eduardo Mingas.

In the final quarter Argentina broke loose with a 16-0 run led by Delfino, Leo Gutierrez and Scola to secure the win. Delfino finished with 22 points, 13 of them in the second half.

The next game for Argentina after a day off is against Jordan at 21:30 while Angola plays Germany at 19:00 local time.

Sergio Hernandez (Coach):  “Congratulations to Angola because they played well. Their play was tough till 4th quarter. Usually everybody thinks Argentina kills the teams with 3 point shots but we played normal and tactical today. We have more experienced players, having played since 2001-2002 and also Scola and Delfino plays in NBA. We play each game like a final.”

Juan Gutierrez (Player): “We played against Angola few times in the past and we know how they play. In the last quarter we played better and put in a better defense and we won. We are happy for this win. Tomorrow is off and we have time to rest.”

Luis Magalhaez (Coach): “Very difficult game in a very difficult group. Our group contains 5 teams out of top 12 according to FIBA’s ranking. Argentina is a great team with good players, good coach and excellent team work. We did our best until the third quarter, but in the last quarter Argentina used their best players we had nothing to do.”

Hermenegildo Mbunga (Player): “We played well during the first three quarters. In the last quarter we made some mistakes. You cannot make mistakes when you play against a great team like Argentina. That’s why we lost.”
