2019 Pacific Games schedule and format finalized

Apia (Samoa) - The schedule and format for the 2019 Pacific Games has been finalized.

The venues and playing order for all the games of the Group Phase (July 8-13) has been determined, while the games in the Final Phase (July 15-17) were also confirmed.

“We are happy to release the schedule and format of the competition of the Pacific Games to give teams ample time for preparation for the tournament. It’s going to be a spectacle and we are confident that the games will be one of the biggest events in the Pacific Games,” said FIBA Oceania Competitions Manager Amanda Jenkins.

The format for the competition will be:

• Teams will play a round robin within their pool in the preliminary round of the competition. (3 games over 6 days)
• The top placed team in each pool will advance to the semi-finals.
• The teams placed 2nd and 3rd in each pool will play cross-over qualifying finals. (QF1 and QF2)
• The winners of the qualifying finals will advance to the semi-finals (to play against the 1st placed teams from preliminary round).
• Semi-final winners play for Gold and the semi-final losers play for Bronze.
• The 4th placed teams from each pool and losers of the qualifying finals will play classification games for positions
The Men's and Women's Division are divided into two pools.

The Men’s pools are as follows:

Pool A
• Guam
• New Caledonia
• Samoa
• Tonga
Pool B:
• Fiji
• Papua New Guinea
• Solomon Islands
• Tahiti

In the Women's Pools:
Pool A
• Cook Islands
• Fiji
• New Caledonia
• Samoa
Pool B
• American Samoa
• Guam
• Papua New Guinea
• Tahiti
In the Men’s division, Guam will return to defend their Gold Medal after their dominant performance in the 2018 Micronesian Games with a Gold Medal as the lone representative of the Micronesian region.

FIBA Melanesian Cup champion Papua New Guinea will be joined by second and third place finisher Fiji and New Caledonia as the representatives of Melanesia.

The Polynesia region will be bannered by FIBA Polynesian Cup top three finishers; Tahiti (Gold Medal), host Samoa (Silver Medal) and Tonga (Bronze Medal)

The Solomon Islands completes the cast as the Wildcard Qualifier.

In the Women’s division, Fiji will lead the field and try to repeat as Gold Medallist in this year’s competition.

The top three finishers of the FIBA Women’s Melanesia Cup; Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and New Caledonia will represent the region.

From the FIBA Women’s Polynesian Cup; the Cook Islands, host Samoa, and Tahiti have qualified to the quadrennial event.

2015 Silver Medallist American Samoa was chosen as the Wildcard Qualifier to complete the 8-team field.
