Gaborone - The second edition of the International Basketball Foundation (IBF) 3x3 Young Lions Cup in Southern Africa is taking place in Gaborone, Botswana from 11 to 13 January 2019 at Molapo stanbic bank Piazza.

1140 young players from 10 countries of the region participated in qualifying events in their respective countries and the winning girls and the winning boys team qualified for the final.

The 72 youths are currently traveling to Gaborone, Botswana to play in the final and take part in a Youth Leadership Workshop.

The Workshop will be facilitated for the first time by local organization Club House and led by Thandi Tumelo. Throughout the workshop, the youths will acquire communication and problem-solving techniques as well as develop their self-esteem. They will be encouraged to work together and understand their leadership potential.

IBF’s CSR Senior Associate Theren Bullock Jr. explained: "We’re trying to use basketball for good. We use the power of basketball as a tool to promote positive social change. The idea is for the youths to be able to learn how to become leaders and for them to use that strength and that potential when they go back to their respective countries".

The young players will also represent their countries in the U18 final tournament. A dunk, skills and shout-out contest will allow the youths to further showcase their skills.

In parallel to the event, there will be a 3×3 referees training, where FIBA 3X3 expert Eric Bertrand will train 20 referees, 12 from Botswana as well as 8 from the region.
