BASKETBALL: The NBL's bold move into the Asian market has been backed up with the Singapore Slingers compiling a powerful line-up for its debut season.

Head coach Gordie McLeod said the Slingers would be "very competitive" before the new franchise opens the NBL season against Adelaide on September 20 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The NBL agreed to transfer the licence from the Hunter Pirates to the Slingers two months ago and Pirates players have formed the basis of the side.

Ex-Hunter players Ben Melmeth, Larry Davidson, Brad Davidson and Aaron Trahair have all signed.
