Isis: "This participation positions Panamanian basketball at the top level"

COLON (DIRECTV Liga de las Americas 2017) - As part of the mindset that Panama basketball has had for almost two years, participation in international tournaments is a priority. As is playing in top club competitions. And that mindset has generated positive results, such as the recent title Correcaminos de Colón achieved in the Liga Centroamericana de Clubes, in El Salvador.

The win against host Santa Tecla BC, 92-79, allowed the Panamanian champion to qualify, for the second consecutive year to the DIRECTV Liga de las Americas. Correcaminos had in its ranks Tyler Gaskins, Ernesto Oglivie, Daniel King, Danilo Pinnock and Yoan Luis Haití.

Uruguayan coach Javier Isis was at the helm of the team during the regional contest and after the conquest he analyzed the virtues of the team and began to think about the expectations generated by a new participation in the Liga de las Americas.

How did the team live the conquest of the Liga Centroamericana de Clubes?
It was a great satisfaction, because of all the hard work completed to make this international leap. That is no small thing for the Panamanian structures, which are in full development. In addition, I’m happy for the owner of Correcaminos, Captain Carlos Garcia, and the Panamanian Federation, who made a great effort, and for the fans, who always support the team. Also my recognition to Marcelo Signorelli, who opened the way and gave me the opportunity to continue growing as a coach.

What did the Central American title mean to the team?
The competition and the experience gave the team a quality growth in sports and development. For the players, participating in five international games is very valuable. It is a learning opportunity that adds priceless experience. It also means that the team continues to empower and professionalize, to catch up with these demanding instances.

What merits did Correcaminos have to win the title?
The merit was completely on the players, who understand the level of the tournament and interpreted the requirements of the International game, which are very different from the local tournament. The structure, the tactical order and applying the game plan were important in the team's achievement.

How is Correcaminos celebrating the return to the Liga de las Americas? How will the good 2015 campaign influence in the 2016 edition of the tournament?
It means a lot to continue the development of players and the structure of the team. This participation positions Panamanian basketball at the top level. It is a country with a basketball culture and a very long basketball history that once again returns to the International Level. Last year was a great shock for all in Panama, so that they know that they can believe and bet on building and thinking big.

What do you think of the qualifying group, along with Soles de Mexicali (MEX), La Union (ARG) and Aguada (URU)?
It will be a very strong group, where Soles, the host, has an important potential. To this we must add that two teams are in the midst of their season, such as Aguada and La Unión. Both are in full competition and come from very important leagues, with players who are up to the circumstances. We will see a high level in the group.
