Flamengo bomb their way past Lakeland into Final

CAIRO (Egypt) - Flamengo moved within one victory of capturing their second FIBA Intercontinental Cup title as the 2014 winners used an impressive barrage of three-pointers to cruise past Lakeland Magic 94-71 and reach Sunday's final in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

Flamengo, who won the Basketball Champions League Americas title to qualify for the showdown in northern Africa, will face the winner of the second Semi-Final between host side Zamalek and title holders Hereda San Pablo Burgos being played later Friday evening.

Turning point:
Flamengo had a solid cushion of six points three minutes into the second quarter - having led by 11 points late in the opening frame - but the Brazilian side blew the game open with a 17-4 run for a 49-30 advantage late in the first half. Lakeland could not get closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The G League champs were down 73-63 early in the fourth quarter but the Flamengo defense did not break, keeping the U.S. team scoreless for 2 minutes while Yago Santos had a layup and an assist in a 6-0 spurt to decide the game for good.

Game hero: Yago Santos led Flamengo with 18 points, but Franco Balbi tallied 17 points as well, including some big shots. Lakeland were within 12 points midway through the third quarter and the 32-year-old Balbi buried a big three-pointer. Balbi also knocked down a triple in the run after Lakeland had made it a 10-point game. For the game, Balbi also collected 4 rebounds, 9 assists and 2 steals for an efficiency of 25.

Stats don't lie: Flamengo drained 18 three-pointers in the game - connecting on 43 percent from downtown - but just as important they held Lakeland to just42 percent on two-pointers. The winners also made 18-of-22 free throws while Lakeland hit just 6-of-8. And Flamengo utilized their deeper rotation, with 44 points off the bench compared to just 22 for Lakeland.

Bottom line: Flamengo head back to the Intercontinental Cup title bout for a second time since winning the 2014 crown. The team reached the 2019 Final in Rio de Janeiro but lost 86-70 to AEK Athens of Greece. Current Flamengo leaders Franco Balbi, Rafa Mineiro and Carlos Olivinha were all on that 2019 team and will have that loss against AEK as extra motivation come Sunday.
