Cholet power past Besiktas, Sporting survive scare as Qualifiers Finals are set

MUNICH (Germany) - Eight teams are now left standing in the fight to fill the seven remaining spots in the FIBA Europe Cup Regular Season.

The Finals of the four Qualifying Tournaments have been set with the 32-team field for the 2022-23 season being confirmed on Friday as the four winners will be joined by three lucky losers.

Cholet Basket produced an impressive display as they knocked out Besiktas JK in the Qualifying Tournament D with an emphatic 93-62 triumph. The hosts made their move in the second quarter as they went on a decisive 23-2 run to take control of the contest.


Justin Patton top scored with 16 points with four other players reaching double figures in the win as they shot 61 percent from the floor.

Last season's Semi-Finalists ZZ Leiden had to come through a major test against newcomers Czarni Slupsk of Poland as they eventually prevailed 78-74. Maarten Bouwknecht top scored with 20 points as the Dutch side came through down the stretch as they next face Cholet.

FIBA Europe Cup regulars Telenet Giants Antwerp and Sporting CP will contest the Qualifying Tournament A Final in Mitrovica after coming through contrasting opening encounters.

Sporting came through a tense battle to edge out BG Gottingen 84-83 with a decisive free throw from Travante Williams in the final seconds; combining with Marcus LoVett for 43 points. Meanwhile, Antwerp saw off Petrolina AEK in a 76-60 victory as Reggie Upshaw posted 11 points and 15 rebounds and Maurice Watson had 11 assists to go with 10 points.

BC Kalev/Cramo were the biggest winners of the day as they took a major step towards qualifying with a crushing 98-61 win over Sigal Prishtina as they backed up their Quarter-Final success.

Kristjan Kitsing poured in a game-high of 24 points with six triples with the points differential counting heavily in their favor ahead of Friday's Final after powering clear in the second half to win by 38 points.

The Estonian side will take on SCMU Craiova in the Final in Jonava after they defeated Kapfenberg Bulls 71-55 in convincing fashion with Shawn Hopkins leading the way with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

Rilski Sportist ended the European debut of BC Wolves as they held off a late fightback to record a 91-76 win on home soil in Samokov. Demajeo Wiggins led the way with a big double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds as five players reached double figures in Qualifying Tournament C action.

Hapoel Haifa await in the Final on Friday after they had earlier secured their place with a 75-64 success against Kataja Basket behind 22 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists from Anthony Hickey.

The three lucky losers will be determined from the runners-up in Friday's Finals with the combined points difference from the last two games taken as the first criteria.
