SL Benfica cruise past PVSK-Veolia to book their spot in the Second Round

MUNICH (Germany) - SL Benfica became the fourth team to make it through to the Second Round on Tuesday evening, while Phoenix Brussels ensured they stay in the hunt.

Having missed out on the chance to wrap up qualification last week, Benfica responded in style with an emphatic 85-66 success over PVSK-Veolia to move to 4-1 in Group A ahead of the final week.

The Portuguese side jumped out to a 19-6 lead after 10 minutes and never looked back; extending their advantage in the third after pouring in 34 points. Jose Silva top scored with 18 points, while 19-year-old Rafael Lisboa contributed 15 points and 4 assists for the second week running.

"We wanted to get qualification today," said Lisboa. "We played a great game against a very strong team and won, which is the most important thing. We managed to stop their three-point shots and only allowed them to score 66 points in a European game. That's a good indicator."

The result means PVSK-Veolia are eliminated, with a huge clash taking place between Inter Bratislava and ZZ Leiden on Wednesday.

Phoenix Brussels defeated their Belgian counterparts for the second time in Group E as they locked up the head-to-head over Spirou Basket with a 75-72 triumph away from home.

The visitors came from 13 points down as they recovered from a slow start as Jonas Foerts led the effort with a team-high 17 points in the win. Brussels are back on the road next week, too, but face a slightly longer trip as they head to group leaders Pinar Karsiyaka in another must-win clash.

Khalid Boukichou had 21 points and 11 rebounds in defeat for Spirou with their fate no longer in their hands as they require results to go their way - as well as having to win their final game - in order to advance.

There are plenty more opportunities for teams to lock up their spots in the Second Round tomorrow as 14 games take place to conclude the Gameday 5 action.
