Will Elan Chalon and Telekom Baskets stand their toughest test yet?

MUNICH (FIBA Europe Cup) - After easing back into action after the Christmas break with a one-game shift on Tuesday, the FIBA Europe Cup schedule is going to get a lot more busy on Wednesday, but most eyes will be on events taking place in Bonn and Chalon-sur-Saone.

In marquee match-ups between teams with undefeated records in the Second Round, Telekom Baskets are set to host Vytautas, while Elan Chalon will try to extend their winning streak against the also faultless Gaziantep.

Although there is plenty of basketball to be played in the Second Round, Group M is already shaping up to be a two-horse race between Telekom Baskets and Vytautas, who have showed little mercy to the other teams in the group.

Having won both of its contests in convincing fashion, the German side sits atop the group standings with an impressive point differential of +57 after handing APOEL a hefty 96-58 defeat in Bonn before cruising to an 83-64 win against Redwell-Gunners on the road in Oberwart.

Meanwhile, the Lithuanian side picked up a 91-72 victory against the Oberwart club in the first game and finished the year by topping APOEL 75-69 in the Cypriot capital Nicosia.

Telekom Baskets have not lost a single game at the Telekom Dome in the FIBA Europe Cup this season, but the task of keeping the streak going was made significantly more difficult by the recent ankle injury to small forward Ryan Thompson.

Although an MRI scan showed it will not keep the 28-year-old American player on the sidelines for too long, he is questionable to play against Vytautas.

One of the team's biggest strengths this season has been roster depth. It will be put to the test once again, but the Predrag Krunic-coached Telekom Baskets have already proved they have found workarounds for situations like this. Injuries to Ken Horton and Konstantin Klein earlier this season did not have major negative consequences.

Having last suffered a loss exactly a month ago, Prienai-Birstonas finished the calendar year with five consecutive victories across all competitions and will not only arrive to Germany with a clean bill of health, but also high in confidence.

Elan Chalon (2-0) v Gaziantep (2-0), 20:00 CET

There is an obvious diarchy in Group K with Elan Chalon and Gaziantep reigning supreme two games into the Second Round and their group rivals Sodertalje Kings and Mures lagging quite a bit behind already.

Both of the group leaders currently share identical 2-0 records and their head-to-head match-ups will likely play a crucial part in determining which of the sides clinches automatic qualification as the winners of the group.

Since the competition will incorporate eight relegated Basketball Champions League teams, only eight more places are available for FIBA Europe Cup teams in the Round of 16, making it rather difficult.

However qualifying as one of the two best second-placed teams does look like a viable option for Elan Chalon and Gaziantep, both of whom have padded their point differential handsomely in the first two games of the Second Round.

In fact, the French side leads a competition-best point differential of +59 at this point in time after hammering in a 101-65 victory against Mures at home and adding an 86-63 triumph against the Kings in Sweden to their tally.

During the winter break, two Elan Chalon players claimed honors in the LNB All-Star events, with John Roberson being named the All-Star Game MVP and Jeremy Nzeulie winning the dunk contest.

The situation in the FIBA Europe Cup is solid, but not as good, for the Stefanos Dedas-coached Gaziantep, who are +20 in the category after taking 72-66 and 90-76 wins against Sodertalje and Mures respectively.

With a win, Elan Chalon could create quite a large cushion and leave the Turkish side needing a bounce-back win in the return leg in Gaziantep, providing the Chalon-sur-Saone outfit can go unscathed against Sodertalje Kings and Mures, when they meet again in the second go-around.
